It seems to me that the liquid melt from the core-mantle boundary is squeezed out by the entire pressure force of the overlying mantle upwards along the weakened zones, forming the mantle jets and then the plumes. Rising to the base of the lithosphere, then - the crust, plumes initiate all the observed tectonic processes. And no need to invent convection in a solid mantle - it is unlikely.
