Derivatization is not a requisite step for phytoconstituent analysis of plant extracts by GC-MS. if you are working with non polar extracts than there is no need of derivatization of plant extracts as such. But if you r dealing with polar extracts which contained polyphenolics, flavonoids etc. which are not volatile in nature in this case you have to derivatized the extract first prior to GC-MS analysis in order to make these compounds volatile.
