The concept of climax community and succession particularly in terrestrial or water ecosystems where perturbations occur are interesting phenomena. Related concepts such as keystone species are also very important. But do these concepts apply in the microbial world where environmental changes drastically shift population and community dynamics in a very short time frame?

Good question. I frequently get the feeling that's what we're just about to explore in all of its details and interconnections - I'm sure much of the concepts do apply, but you're probably right in that they need adaptation to describe the processes going on at "microbial" time and spatial scales (but then, what are the dimensions of these times and spaces? How variable are they?). For example, as you mention the concept of key species, there's a different concept of "species" to be applied (https://www.nature.com/articles/nrmicro1872). I hope others can give more definite answers...

I think that the concept can be applied because, as you mentioned, it is a question of scale and especially of generation renewal time. so I think it stays the same for the bacteria but only that the speed becomes faster.
