Nowadays, in my opinion, BIGDATA cannot be placed as a well founded area in Science and Tech. However for innovator perhaps can be considered an area of reference where companies are getting great return. Again, Is BIG DATA a fashion or is it really a consolidated science area?
In some industries big data existed decades before the term was coined. One such industry was telecom utility companies where (for example) in 1996 a local cellpone company I worked for processed ~300 million call records per month . However, there are many differences between the data of the past and of today. Today big data also includes data from sensors and humans which is inherently noisy and unreliable.
Big data is indeed a buzzword these days. It does give insights into many aspects of human behaviour. You might want to look atIBM Watson, which can analyse data from different sources and give insights using natural language processing. It is used in a host of applications. Big data is thus into areas of science and tech.
