this is not only a question of ore grade and tonnage but there are many socio-economic parameters which can hardly be evaluated by an expert from abroad with not direct insight into the society living there. It is important that the small-scale mining operations do not end up in many ways like those digging for gems and coltan in Africa and abroad rendered the plaything of outside powers. Your question is worth to be discussed but without a series of hard facts presented here I am afraid it may be some kind of an idle talk with a lot of well-meaning but useless answers.

Prof Harald G. Dill , your response is unique and covered the reality of the possibilities. I was on field trip to the area recently. Much of the alluvial and/or elluvial placer are largely depleted in famous areas but new prospective areas are also being discovered daily. The decline in Nigerian currency value make artisan miners more active lately. However, the security challenges around the area is a huge obstacle that affects interest of potential investors. If Government can do the needful to put measures in place for safety, then I believe its a very profitable venture.
