I'm interested in identifying whether maize was imported into a site from multiple distant sources, or whether it was all locally grown. And I'm wondering whether the genetic diversity, nuclear or mitochondrial, within a collection of maize samples might reasonably be a proxy for diversity of sources. That's all assuming, of course, that the DNA is well enough preserved to reasonably assess diversity. Any and all insights on this possibility are welcome!
