I am professor of pediatrics in Babylon university/medical college in Iraq and there are only limited data about screening of autism in my country. I have done a limited study about that in toddlers by using M-CHAT
I am using M-CHAT & CARS for screening. I think these tests cover the essential steps for the diagnosis of autism and these are:
1) Developmental Screening
2) Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation
We can say that all children should be screened for developmental delays and to monitor those who are at a higher risk for developmental problems due to preterm birth, low birth weight, or having a brother or sister with an ASD.
I agree with Dr. Khaled Saad that earlier diagnosis can be done by following such steps.
I think there may be a validated Arabic translation of the Social and Communication Questionnaire (SCQ). Also, have you heard of the Indian Scale for the Assessment of Autism? There is an Arabic translation and the ISAA is one of the few well-researched measures (that I am aware of) that has been developed by, and for, non-western populations.
i am currently in USA but worked in Iraq after graduation from 2009-2011. I am interested in both autism and ADHD diagnosis and wonder if we could work together to collect data from Iraqi patients.
I'm currently involved in setting up a research study in Lebanon where we will be measuring a range of psychopathology in children aged 8-16 years. We are keen to incorporate a brief screening tool for ASD / autistic traits but I'm not aware of anything that has been validated for screening in the general population in that age group in Middle Eastern populations. If anyone is aware of tools that have been used please let me know.
In the longer term I am interested in working to test and validate measures of ASD in Lebanon so I would be very interested to hear from people who might be doing similar work.
