I am not a physiologist and I have not hands-on experience about it, so I fear I can't help but I am aware there is definitely some fundamental research going on on the topic, as enlighted in the state of the art paper I recently presented at the IEEE EMBC Conference. You can maybe have a look and identify from the literature and the references some potential research groups that are carrying on right now research on this topic.

Yes, it's also related to H2S: indeed, according to Lee, 2008 (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18186703) and Blackstone et al. , 2005 (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15845845), H2S was 

found to enable mice to enter hypothermia for up to six hours, with spontaneously occurring arousals. It affects the cellular production of ATP but the underlying mechanisms are still unclear.

My "go to" lab for hibernation research is Kenneth Storey's group at Carleton University in Ottawa...They study  hibernation and freezing as strategies for surviving the winter.
