I'm getting about 5-10 emails a day with 'Calls for Papers' - generally from a few publishers, and without any request for this information. Most of the time they're irrelevant to my field. It's annoying, and somehow it seems low for scientists to spam other scientists. Or am I just being oversensitive?
Those who are spamming are probably not scientists, but clever businessmans who wants you to pay a publication/conference attendance fee. Researchers and faculty members use personal contacts and professional mailing lists to recruit contributors.
I totally agree with you, Alastair! It is extremely annoying!

One could even create a SPAM filter based on the frequency of "eminent" in a mail - which might be promising.
I sometimes send them "SPAM" back and even got a reply once:
"Dear Dr. David,
Thanks for your interest.
This is to informing you that if you are interested to publish with our journal then submit your articles in correct format. If not interested don't send unnecessary files. Why we have to pay for your publication? This is open access organization only running based on the author publication fees.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Regards Emily"
This is especially "funny" as the same Emily contacted me 4 times afterwards from different journals with the exact same text, despite multiple unsubscribe requests.
