Please check the reports published by the International Energy Agency (IEA). You can visit the following URL and search for the report on land surface wind.
TYVM ! However, I am looking for actual wind data, not reports. I need these data to use in spatial queries (GIS technology) and subsequent data analysis.
I was thinking of modelled data, predicted at the pixel level over continents. Such data are available for sea sueface winds (direction and speed). I wonder whether there are equivalent products for land surface winds.
I think climexp.nl has some. Cant remember exactly what. Possibilities include gust, mean speed, direction, height above ground. Low resolution i think. Will have to find out for pale blu, so will try to find out more in the next few days. Els might know from her btv stuff.
0.75x0.75 degree - gridded over the globe and Europe. Daily and sub-daily data is available. The daily data extraction is tricky though (due to start date). On the climate data side it's surely one of the best product available (it is used to prescribe boundary conditions for mesoscale models etc). Model mixed with observation data using assimilation method
The actual surface wind data can be found in the GTS (Global Telecommunication System) of WMO (World Meteorological Organization) for Region 6 (Europe). There are hourly (synoptic) surface wind data in SYNOP reports for hundreds of synoptic/meteorological stations. These data receive all member countries of WMO through its specialized state meteorological agency. Agency of your state must have this wind data.
