I have an MSc student doing a dissertation project on process fault detection and control. The student is really keen to find an application from the Oil and Gas industry. I wonder if anyone has found or is aware of a challenge or benchmark problem that might be useful?

unfortunately, I don't know any benchmark specially related to Oil and Gas industry. However, there are some industrial process benchmarks that could be very interesting and may provide challenges very similar to that faced in some Oil and Gas processes.

Hello, I work in the gas industry and my PhD thesis is about fault detection and isolation methods in DCS of gas refining industries and I am trying to train faults by the SVM method so that if the fault is repeated, it can be detected quickly. Diagnose without human intervention.
The attached article is my first article, although it is very basic and I am in the process of completing it.
In the oil and gas industry, there is no automatic fault detection, we only have a disconnection alarm for each part, such as a transmitter or a valve, of course, in my opinion, in the future and the next generation of transmitters and actuators, several types of faults should be automatically detected in them so that they can be repaired more quickly. Detect more complex faullts.
