For our project we need to conduct an interview with an expert who has conducted an LCA (preferably using the 'OpenLCA' software). Would anyone be willing to have a Skype interview?
Hi yes, we're going to conduct an LCA on various takeout container compositions: plastic/microwavable plastic, compostable fibre/plastic, aluminum, paper/paperboard, and polystyrene/styrofoam in the Vancouver, BC Canada area. We are working with the local 'Society Promoting Environmental Conservation (SPEC)'. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)
I used Open LCA for an analysis of heat exchanger. So I used it in combination of metals and transport/ manufacturing of alloys.
never used it for plastic. However, as Open LCA is merely a tool, you would need actual datapoints (i used ecoinvent database ) . What is the question/help you need exactly?
Our question is 'What are the environmental impacts of various single-use takeout containers in Vancouver, BC?' We were wondering if databases such as Ecoinvent include local data?
yes, ecoinvent uses also local data. However, as in your case those containers are certainly not locally manufactured, you will also need global data. Please have a look at http://www.ecoinvent.org/ where you can search the database and find if those data is accurate enough. As it is one of the most used database it certainly has enough data for you to use. However, modelling (eq. what do you include, what/which step do you neglect) is also quite important.
I would guess that together with open lca you could reach your goal.
I have never used OpenLCA but I did a review about it, as I know it doesn’t have own database, but you can upload other database such as Ecoinvent/ Open-IO/ NREL/ Ecospold, Database formats that can be imported includes that EcoSpold/EcoSpold01/EcoSpold02/ ILCD 1.1 in the future, but for formats are quite simple just Excel, you could check it at Openlca- http://openlca.org/index.html
But for your need, Gabi and Simpro will be more useful, because they have more update date to use.avI hLCA, but I have been reviewd a
