Is it necessary to check how and what we are teaching, from time to time? What are your views in this context? What is the protocol in your country, your university?
Certainly, academic have to submit themselves to accountability.
Perhaps, no other profession has so much autonomy as academics have.
The problem is more in public universities.
Private systems are able to enforce accountability; but in public universities there is good bit of union and political involvement in the academic auditing process, which would have it diluted or not let it happen at all.
Despite wonderful brains being produced by India, research output is dismal. And, those who do not find it interesting and challenging to work in mediocre systems, go to the developed world.
In a way accreditation of institutes and programs is itself an audit. We need widespread acceptance of these and similar ideas.
We need to meet the ISO standards for academia. Timetables, attendance lists, mark lists, annual observation forms are all given an identity number and audited. And, our files are audited. WE just have to be concerned about Documentation.
Yes we are completely cover by auditing all over for our university accreditation system from the Ministry of Research and University. This is addressing both research and education that have to meet certain standards so Universities are going to be rewarded or penalized (in funding) according to the accreditation results. So, we have to publish a certain number of papers and teach for a certain number of hours and, meanwhile, comply with different other criteria. If you as University are in you will be rewarded, if not, funding will be reduced. One criteria is how many graduates can find a job independently of the social-economical context of where your university is located! So, in southern regions we will be always penalized for this. Furthermore, often it does not matter the quality of what you deliver, the really important is the amount you produce. Is this a good auditing process?
Thank you very much Lijo, Debi, Miranda, Giovanni, Mahfuz, Sribas for the feedback. Sometimes I feel, there should be a universal standard pattern of teaching and academic auditing, so that it will be universally standardized. It will create an ideal academic world.
The audit is a tool that helps the university administration, ensuring that internal controls and work routines are being skillfully executed and that data reflect trust and credibility. Im my university we have student's feedback system for teachers. This is very important to evaluate the quality of education allowing that distortions are corrected.
Yes, it is absolutely necessary to check from time to time the "how" and "what" in order to meet the requirements of the stakeholders and to continuously improve.
I suggest the combination of external audits every three years and annual self assessments.
The external audit should be based on a thorough understanding of changes in the research environment, stakeholder's requirements, results to be pursued and enablers. The results of the external audit are the foundation for a 3 year development program, clearly identifying the improvement areas, setting goals for each area and a plan how to achieve them step-by-step.
The annual self-assessment mainly checks goal achievement in each improvement area and identifies necessary adaptations to the original improvement program to account for deviations and/or new challenges.
Research institutions striving to be (among) the best, will combine the external audits with benchmarking - either the most successful research institutions or the best of best organizations in certain improvement/capability areas.
Dear, Yes, academic auditing is necessary. As academic lecturer, we have to know what we give, what we need to give, how many % of students can get your lecture, and what is your students response. TQ
Sure, as in academia, we have to make sure that we deliver updated information to our candidates, that linkage academic study with practice. Regardless, there is or there not a formal academic auditing system. But, in cases of non-existence, the faculty member should employ a personal system of auditing.
Academics are greatly responsible for maintaining the quality of the programmes offered by the universities. Hence a kind of quality analysis is required of the academics from time to time. Academic auditing is conduct on this context. This has to be carried out by a highly specialised body.
