Dear all,

I would like to use a bacteria test kit to have a preliminary result in terms of microbiological contamination of drinking water. Such kits are rapid, but clearly not very precise, as their sensitivity threshold is very high (100 cfu/ml) for drinking water, where we need a sensitivity of 1 cfu/100 ml (10^4 higher).

However they detect not only coliform bacteria (as drinking water analyses usually do), but also non-coliform.

Is this threshold sensitive enough to identify a serious faecal contamination?

If contamination is not identified, what is the maximum expected level of contamination (considering that some bacteria could be harmless)?

Could anybody give me any indication, please?

Best regards,

Marco
