I am writing a thesis on A systematic analysis of security threats in the Internet of Things and ideas for their elimination. Now my project supervisor is saying that I should practically implement an IoT system and then write what I have done in designing it and securing it. I am confused as I am definitely doing a Masters thesis, studying at home, however how could I implement at home

Here is an example : a wireless doorbell. You fix the button to press on your door or next to it, outside of your home. The bell can be upstairs, in the garden, etc. It's convenient. Such radio systems costing 10 euro have no security. So when anyone rings at you, an unauthorized observer, having installed a receiver (similar to the wireless bell part, taking the bell off, connecting its output to a mobile phone for instance) can get the information transmitted.
The privacy of the owner of the wireless ringing is endangered. You pay 10 euro and you lose your privacy...
Propose remedies... That's a home system easy to address.
You can start with an IoT project like this.
Use a temperature sensor and interface it to a GSM mobile using Arduino or equivalent controller based system. Program in such a way that the readings are sent regularly. If there is an abnormal condition, the controller will detect it and send an alerting signal to the GSM network.
In the next phase, you can send corrective signal like switching off the boiler remotely using GSM network.

If you are not able to implement an IoT security system . then you can go with second option i.e Simulator .
