Wonderful idea. After all, we take non-medical other people as assistants. Why should medical students not be taken as assistants? It will certainly help both the students (aspiring surgeons) as well as the surgeons.

OK. But patient has nothing to do with the constitution of a "surgical team", as I feel and they give us consent for the whole surgical team including assistants, nurses, anesthetists, and the ward nursing team. All these teammates have an immense impact on the outcome of any surgery. This is my perception but you are the best judge of your decisions. I feel that medicolegally, it might not be necessary. The surgeon is responsible vicariously. Regards,
