Some product and technological innovations, etc. are the beginning of creating new inventions. On the other hand, new inventions develop a technique in which new technologies are created. New technologies change civilization, are the source of economic progress, create a new reality within which the environment for creating new innovations is created.
I would rather say, inventions require innovation in order to put them in new business strategies, but innovation needs inventions to build new markets. It is the chicken and the egg story, the one cannot without the other. Schumpeter already struggled with this issue many years ago. Thinking out of the box as an innovation strategy often require inventive insights to solve problems and the other way, inventions often require an innovation view of the future to make them succesful and needed for markets.
