Li-Fi was introduced in 2011 to provide pervasive data communication specially in areas susceptible to electromagnetic interference, e.g., aircraft cabins, hospitals and also offering higher transmission speeds. Nowadays, the IoT is referred to as a pervasive technology which establishes IP based communication between many embedded devices across the globe. Hence, we have two technologies with relatively the same goal. Whats your opinion about merging these two technologies to gain great outcomes? Do you think it is possible to do such a thing or not?
I think the topics are orthogonal.
First, IoT can involve any number of scenarios, including scenarios in which line of sight communications are not feasible. In fact, that may just be the most common of situations.
Secondly, the proponents of LiFi seem to forever ignore the uplink. Presumably, the IoT devices will do more than just accept frames from the LED downlink, and will have to send data upstream. Are each of these devices provided with LEDs for the uplink? I doubt it, although something along those lines might be attempted. Many LED sources as uplinks, one LED downlink?
We normally see LiFi involving the LED lights already existing in a location, such as a hall, a conference room, what have you. So perhaps, are the IoT devices expected to use those same hall lights for their uplink? You might set up a wired network for the IoT devices to all simultaneously have access to these hall lights? Doesn't sound sensible. Use RF uplinks? The where are the advantages of using light?
I think we need a better description of how these systems are supposed to work.
I sincerely hope it never happens.
We've been under constant DDoS attack for two months from a botnet composed of IoT devices (routers, video recorders and other stuff). The only upside is that our IDS/IPS can drop the connection and report to the owner of the device faster than the next hack comes in.
Faster IoT devices would not be a blessing...

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a worldwide, enormously complex network structure for the networking of different things. Recommendation ITU-T Y.2060 defines the IoT as follows:
IoT: A global infrastructure for the information society, enabling advanced services by interconnecting (physical and virtual) things based on, existing and evolving, interoperable information and communication technologies.
Conclusion: In the IoT, the LiFi technology is used for local data transmission and will play an important role.

Light Fidelity (Li-Fi) is a new technology that used visible and infrared light spectrum to transmit wireless data with omnidirectional from point to another. Compare with Wi-Fi, the advantages of Li--Fi is high bandwidth, security, and immunity.
I too believe that both technologies could co-exist. There are pros and cons of both and as you already mentioned there are certain scenarios where only Li-Fi would work. If we want both kind of networks to interact then there just needs to be an information relay at one end that connects Li-Fi world to the internet.
Yes, LiFi can be made bidirectional, but there's a reason why that version of it is never demonstrated in the halls where the technology is being advertised. It's hardly impressive, when bidirectional. For bidirectional LiFi, you need every device to transmit a beam, or beams, of light. There's no "magic" in that, as there appears to be when the hall lights are doing all the work. And the disadvantages become rather obvious.
IoT could describe any number of things, but it's frequently used to describe systems consisting of many sensors, often wireless sensors and remotely controlled devices, distributed throughout a home, a factory, vehicles, roads, and so on. I don't think one can assume that this type of system topology will frequently include direct, line of sight propagation paths, among all of the devices.
The bandwidth potential is enormous. Aside from that, LiFi has all of the disadvantages of schemes that operate in the 20 GHz to 60 GHz regions. Easily blocked propagation paths.

By using the full-duplex scheme of Li-Fi in the structure of IoT, I think a huge step would be taken towards the real Internet of every thing. This topic could be such an interesting field of academia and industry in the coming years.
LiFi will just be one of the enabling technology for IoT. LiFi also will play its role in the 5G technology.
