Many foreign language teachers think that the topics of their lessons should be made as close to their students' reality as possible. Yet, there is also the issue of developing intercultural competence. Do you have any suggestions to make these two approaches reconcile in a lesson?
Here s a model I have used for cross-cultural understanding, which is closely related to intercultural competence. It does not directly answer your question, but it may be of benefit to you.

Intercultural competence refers to the worlds in which we live and act. Indubitably, these unique universes of social reality are most often totally different from one another. In other words, the ability to interact effectively and appropriately with people of other cultures considering their respected values and norms, and expectations of the relationship are sometimes in contrast with those of the students learning a foreign language. Recently, the notion of glocalization has been suggested in order to reconcile the learners' realities with the socio-cultural aspects of the language they are learning. This term is a combination of the words "globalization" and "localization" used in economic circles, but it is equally applicable to FL learners and FL learning. Accordingly, acculturation process should respect learners' local culture , but at the same time , should make learners become aware of cultural idiosyncrasies in L2 without getting disinterested in their own surrounding realities.

Intercultural competence in teaching is very crucial since it increase the students knowledge of other countries cultures. I agree with Dr Reza in training our students to respect the cultures of others including their ways of living and worshipping. I suggest that making this kind of presentation as a journey with a students as tourists who discover the new culture. This way may be more easier and full of suspense.

As regards teaching a foreign language like English in India, there are many versions of the Queen's English like Hienglish which is a dialect of the spoken national language Hindi and English. If the Foreign language teacher gets his notes made in hienglish and then changes them in good English the students would learn and adapt the new foreign language better
