I want to test the cytotoxicity of my surfactant compound. Usually, people in Biology will dissolve the sample in water or DMSO (0.1 - 1%) concentration. However, my compound seems not to dissolve in either water or DMSO, but well dissolve in 0.1% NaOH aqueous solution. So, is it safe to use NaOH instead of water or DMSO? Any effect on the biological aspect?

before you do it. I think you need to test NaOH for MTT assay, because DMSO already tested and not affect the cell lines. Additionally what types of cell lines you need to test? maybe you need to see if there is any affect or not?

Our collaborator in Biology is using the Mouse Bone Marrow cell for the test. I've read that NaOH is not toxic to certain cells, but not sure whether different types of cell will have a different effect on NaOH.
you need to read some paper related to your work and which cell you will use and which is reported before. Then compare with your work.

NaOH will definitely affect the pH of the media, and ultimately, the cell viability. If it is unavoidable, find the best and lowest possible NaOH concentration to be used to dissolve the compound. It is always recommended to run the test with the vehicle control.
