I'm interested in exploring the use of conservation dogs for detecting cryptic bird nests. Any insights regarding experiences, costs, advice, things to consider etc. would be greatly appreciated.

The best person I know to ask is Steve Austin. Steve trained dogs for us to find rabbits, foxes and feral cats. I have been using my dog for a couple of years now.
Steve train a dogs to find the Eastern Bristle Bird here in Australia. It is a very rare bird. He trains dogs to find all sorts of things including Koala in trees and even weeds.

There's a Welsh company called conservation dogs who train and use dogs for ecological surveys.
In Amami island in Japan they are training dogs to detect Mongoose (H. auropunctatus) and other sp. too. They have some references about it. Sorry but I dont have the citation but I saw the training dog working. check in web Amami mongoose eradication and find colleagues.
In Cuba we use domestic dog to detect native mammals (hutia rodents), wild pig, wild cat and other species. It is traditional use in rural places. In my paper Mamiferos introducidos e invasores (Mamiferos en Cuba, 2011 book) i wrote a little about the use of domestic dog to biodiversity assesment. the paper is available in my profile.
