This is far more complex than you might imagine. First, in this context, you must determine what the word "ton" means. Is it a measure of mass or of volume. Then you need to determine how vast the vessel will be going. You will need to know its length and its hull configuration. For example, is it a monohull or a catamaran. You will need to learn its propulsion system and the power of the engine required for it to achieve the speed described or required.
As Sakir and Mahdi have suggested above, reading some basic books on naval architecture would be helpful. You could, of course, just check Wikipedia but that may be too easy.
