Different establishments belonging to the hotel and restaurant industry worldwide have been using Back Office Systems or Accounting Software in producing Financial Statements and Statistics Reports. Would it be advantageous if hospitality management students learn how to use a Back Office Computer Application System, regardless of brand?
From my point of view - of course it would. Students need to develop a broad view on the business and also understand areas which are maybe a little further apart from them. However , when managing a hotel accounting would be a crucial part of the game.
Dear Christopher, most hospitality management curricula offer training on front and back office systems with elements related to accounting (the so called main-courante module). The purely accounting software is for those students who intend to work in the accounting department of a hospitality business. Concluding, a computer software including modules such as reservations, front office, night audit, management information systems and the like would be sufficient for the training of a hospitality student.

Hospitality industry is becoming more profit and cost profit conscious, as customer retention is increasingly focusing on good price, quality, and services. As hospitality providers have to place greater attention on increasing their revenue/minimizing their costs, they have to rely on financial/managerial accounting techniques/knowledge. Accordingly, recruiters/hirers are seeing accounting/financial knowledge as important, as hirees should be able to understand of running a business from the perspective of numbers (vide: Jagels and Coltman, 2004; Kwok et al, 2011).
