Industry 4.0 emerge as a new workplace in which virtual and augmented reality, for example, but also internet of things, big data and other tehcnologies, are propaged as ways for improving productivity. What profiles of project management improvement are potencially possible, and are actually in use in this workplace context?
Put simply, project management must keep pace with developments in industry 4.0. Digitization makes it possible to develop individual, customer-specific solutions within the framework of projects and to test them virtually quickly. This supports agile approaches to a large extent. Digital communication and collaboration possibilities can also be used for project management. This promotes speed and the possibility to bundle available resources. The project participants can network and collaborate with each other comprehensively and in real time via mobile apps; the entire course of the project can be documented in virtual space. Cloud services will play a central role here. This would be an instrumental view. Another question would be what qualifications such project management will need in the future.

I would see three dimensions here: one is increased speed of innovation and change, second the availability of supportive IT-tools in project management, and third, availability of data. Adding to the answers already given by Michael Klotz , I regard virtual modelling of products and processes (e.g. in construction or software development) a method affecting how projects are going to be implemented. Modelling can help to cope with complexity and test underlying project ideas at very early stage to achieve a joint understanding of expectations of project stakeholders. Further, with industry 4.0, the availability of data is growing, that will affect project management. It can help to improve project planning and continuous learning. Agile approaches with very frequent retrospectives embrace this continuous improvement aspect. I think Knowledge Management (with the Manage Project Knowledge process added to the latest PMBOK guide), will have a growing importance in managing projects efficiently across organizations. This includes to e.g. identify knowledge, gain insights from data collected and make the resulting knowledge accessible in the organization. To me, this would be one key qualification of a project manager in the future, along with skills in managing online collaboration and selecting appropriate IT tools to support collaboration, transparency and control in the project. Even a specific role of a knowledge facilitator in projects might be feasible to accommodate the need for dedicated knowledge management in projects.
