As a researcher working on waste management, I would like to know how can we (researchers) make things better for people? Waste management is an essential service. It was continued even in the strictest of lockdowns. However, countries such as India are not adequately prepared to deal with waste in pandemic situations. The conditions were lousy pre-lockdown, improved temporarily in terms of quantity of waste during lockdown but now (post-lockdown) things are getting worse.
How can we improve such conditions with our knowledge of data science and operations research?
How best to manage face masks after use considering that such waste is so much with the coming of regulations to wear them to contain the spread of covid-19
Kaveri Kala Your observations are very correct about the poor state of waste management in India, Urban and Rural. Used masks, gloves and PPE kits discarded everywhere add further to the risk.

Honestly, even in developed countries there is not much we can do regarding waste management in Covid-19 situation. May be the best we can do is to teach people to produce less and less MSWs. However, special source separation schemes should be implemented for households having Covid-19 patients.

I think human relation and behaviour should part of waste management. So the safety of waste workers should be a point of this discussion in this pandemic situation. 2 ) Risk management of recycling of solid waste used in the health sector
1. Highest level.. Common sense. Human cannot be free roaming like animals. Civilized are those who realize and effect mutual responsibility, accountability than individually freedom that put others at risk, higher risk, fatal risk. Then everyone realize they must ware mask, must dispose contaminated proper. Individual freedom must take second seat after we are civilised, living together, interact, serving each other.
2. With 1, the next step cone naturally, we must dispose of contaminated properly.
3. with 2, we must develop simple, effective incineration methods, scalable for one person, one family, one enterprise, one hospital, one municipal.
