So, in your country, all score is based on the absolute values.
In my country, the lecturer may choose the absolute or relative values (based on normal distribution in the class/course). But, in my university, most of my colleagues prefer to use the normal distribution.
In Aswan faculty of medicine, mostly using summative assessment with direct method like test.
But last year the republic in ministry of high education regarding faculties of medicine began to apply new system by applying credit points instead of credit hours or attendance, the difference in the activities and participation of students not just attendance. Also to fulfilling portfolio and assignment. But still summative assessment is the main way. There is no formative assessment to know the gap in information of students.
Yes, I think indeed in many universities there are differences in assessment methods between medical education and other education, for example in mechanical and electrical engineering.
In my department, mechanical engineering, we have several points to be assessed, namely mid-term test, final test, home work, and some special assignments. Then the value of each component we give a weighting factor, then we sum up the total score. Now, the problem arises when we are going to make the grades (A, B, C, or E). So, there are two options we can choose to make the grade of each student.
The question I want to discuss is which option is better for us, and the student, to make the grade based on the first or second options?
Usually grade A for example from 85 % and above , grade B from 75 to 84.9 % , grade C from 65 to 74.9 % , grade D 60 to 64,9 %. There is also grade E in other colleges.
It is according to the system of collages or universities based on ministry of high education.
The same process as you said in medical faculties in Egypt ; mid term , final exam, log book & activities, home work and portfolio.
They based according to the new system on credit points that be translated into total score.
Also I'm in my 1st degree in MD got grade A in MD (medical doctorate) as it is pass and fail system in Egypt.
I will ask a professor in quality assurance unit in education system improvement for medical school in Egypt and will reply about which is better for examiners and students.
But there is still a question about the score. How do you find it? Is it based on the absolute values or normal distribution of the values in a class/course?
It is based on absolute values referred to the system. It was different between medical faculties in old system regarding total score of each class all over the republic.
But with the new system that depend on credit points the score is the same between medical faculties in all universities in Egypt.
So, in your country, all score is based on the absolute values.
In my country, the lecturer may choose the absolute or relative values (based on normal distribution in the class/course). But, in my university, most of my colleagues prefer to use the normal distribution.
