Consider 2 cascaded H-Bridge inverters, if I'm trying to eliminate 5,7,11,13 harmonics, using SHE equation 5 angles are generated, but the output waveform has only 2 steps i.e., from 0-V and V-2V. so at which of these 5 angles must the step occur.
in your 5 level inverter only two switching angles are available, if you are working at power switching frequency. however, you can introduce additional notches in each levels to remove more harmonics
In this paper a more recent technique (SHMPWM) is used. This technique makes an optimization that reduces the harmonic content wrt the SHEPWM (which is 40 years old). In essence, you may look for the study made in the paper for the different patterns that can be used taking into account the modulation index. And of course if you can, instead of using the SHE you can use the SHM method.
