The current project standard for working with GPS data is Decimal Degrees. There is however an ever ongoing conversion that is taking place to allow for the use of decimal degrees. I am therefore interested to obtain your input on how difficult it would be to bring DD MM SS data directly in from the GPS to map it. What would the procedure be?
Maybe you can use GDAL (http://www.gdal.org/)

It quite easy to import DD MM SS data to QGIS. You should add plug-in to QGIS. There is about 17 plug-ins in QGIS. One of them is GPS tool.

save the lat/long file as a .txt file. go to Layer menu> "Add Delimited Text Layer" > browse for the .txt file. provide TAB as the selected delimiter. the XY fields will be automatically entered. once finished you will find the shape file on your workspace. check the coordinates below...they will be in deg decimal unit.
I hope I have understood your problem and provided a solution accordingly.
Í'm using spreadsheet to do simple conversion and the resulting value can be saved as text and imported into qgis.

I agree! No doubt , use the GPS module in both cases: on-line connected GPS or off-line e.g. GPX data. If the module doesn't working, maybe the gpsbabel is missing on your system.

but how to save the lat/long in .txt or .csv format, as I tried but I was not able to do. Please help. I am able to do it in degree decimals but not in DD MM SS.

Zahid Wani, I have done it in deg-dec format. I am yet to try with Deg-Min_sec.
In text file make three tab separated columns:- id, long, lat, then under each column put your values, again separated with tab. then only TAB separator will work in QGIS.
Kowalski Sir, I will try to see the GPS tool. I just mentioned the crudest form of the method. Since you gave a bright insight I will try to work with it.
It's fairly easy if you have gdal plugin installed. Generally, QGIS comes with gdal plugin. Look for 'DecToPackedDMS' function and what it does: http://geoinformatics.aalto.fi/doc/Geo-GDAL/html/class_geo_1_1_g_d_a_l.html#7773bf5c2433eea01a4a42d8702d93e5.

I did it before, but its not working, as its taking each tab as separate and when I added the column lat and long, it is showing, the degree of lat in lat column and lat minute in long column rest the data (lat-second, long-DD MM SS) is not shown.
I use DNR Garmin (http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/mis/gis/DNRGPS/DNRGPS.html) to download GPS data. Then you must export in one of the formats you want (for QGIS ideally choose shape file format), or GPX, or other.
I use the DNR Garmin as well. Works well with different file versions
I agree with the aforesaid. There are many different ways of converting DMS to DD. I had my own way, but in order to check that it was working okay, I found an Excel routine. Please see attached working Excel file, and hope that it will be helpful.

Use decimal degrees, (Degrees+(Minute/60)+(Seconds/3600)). If you calculate euclidean distance, reprojecting data to x, y (North, East) depending the reference system adopted for the study area,
