In power cycles, some of the output work of the turbine is fed back to drive the compressor, which is often quoted as back work. If we simply provide work input to the compressor by a separate shaft without utilising this so-called back work, the turbine output would be higher: efficiency remaining the same in both the cases. So what is the advantage?
Saving space reducing unit size , saving maintenance costs of an auxiliary unit, and separate power cost (fuel etc) and also for design optimization. Suppose an aircraft operates on open brayton cycle mod, don't you think the size of an auxiliary unit would increase the size and mass of air craft, disturbing its thrust to weight ratio? And the amount of fuel and size of the unit matters too (As compressors require significant power to operate, they reuire good amount of work input).
Hence we don't use an auxiliary unit to drive compressor in gas turbine cycle.
Well that what make the gas turbine generator compact and self standing...just look at aircrft enginesm if you call for power for the compressor then where is that power coming from.
