This question is about naming.
I am struggling to find out whether a name exists within the field of operations management research in order to address such an "approach" explained as follows:
- you have a production system (even a simple equipment) as your base case (let's call it BC);
- you plan to invest in a new configuration of your production system, or simply to change its operations --> you model one or more possible design alternatives (let's call them C1, C2, etc)
- you define the performance indicators you will use to compare BC, C1, C2 (can be economic, environmental ones)
- you model how these systems may work, calculate the indicators and compare the alternatives.
Any references, if well-connected to this topic, are most welcome.

Hello. You are talking about similarity analysis. List of quantitative indicators constitutes n-dimantional space. Every case (BC, C1, C2, ...) is represented as a point of this space. Comparing of cases consists in determining of distance between the corresponding points. Below is comparison of different methods of measuring distances (equations 2.13-2.17). Regards

You could also drag in some methodology from product development to compare the cases, by using a Morphological Matrix to evaluate partial solutions (or in this case, performance indicators).

this is usually called scenario analysis in a general management context. Perhaps you can use the same in an Operations management context also.
you might be talking about system configuration, you set up scenarios and alternatives of a production system (factory, warehouse, ...)
