If you have groups of X-Y data (for example 5 groups) and it is required to make a relationship (equation) for each group in MS Excel then discussing these equations together, what is the preferred choice from the followings:
1. Fixing the type of equation (for example linear type) for all groups regardless of the R-square value.
2. Choosing the equation which has maximum R-square value regardless of its type.

I think the second option is because always in equations we choose an equation that gives the closest results to data when used in applications for data
As far as I know, the equation that has the highest R square value is the one that most matches the data ( the best fit for the given data), so it is obvious that choosing the equation that gives that maximum R value is the most appropriate choice while using Microsoft Excel as data analyser.

The highest R square value indicates best fit equation, so it is appropriate to choose the equation for high R square value. But if you have an idea of the behavior of your system then best fit equation may also be considered.
