Innovation is necessary to use technology for better service of the people. In innovation the reduction of the cost is important. However, you need technology for the betterment of the society. Therefore, scientific research is very important. The invention and innovation should go hand in hand. More emphasis on innovation with out having new technology will not be good.

While Research & Development (R&D) and Innovation has always been at the core of success for any organization since ages – until some time back it has been somehow considered like an ‘assumed’ thing. However in the recent years – as competition for almost all businesses heats up and hence the immediate need to start differentiating becomes more acute – the hue and cry about R&D and/or Innovation about/within any organization has taken a new proportion. In most of the organizations I have been working with or dealt with – I see that the Leaders are constantly thinking and talking about driving and pushing R&D/Innovation within the organization; the Mid-Management are required to think about implementing and extracting value through R&D/Innovation; and the Rank-and-File individuals are responsible for execution. Yet, one of a common challenge I have seen in almost all these organizations is across the board lack of clear definition of what R&D and Innovation means and how it differentiates from each other. Needless to say even I have had my share of confusions and misunderstandings – and have often been guilty of using/understanding these terms in an incorrect fashion...

It is hard to deny that one of the keys to foster sustainable economic development lies in connecting scientific research with innovation in the production of goods and services. Many countries, among them almost all in Latin America, are still struggling just to understand this simple fact. By neglecting science, they put at risk their future.

Innovation drives scientific research to solutions to sustain comparative advantages, cut costs, increase efficiency and effectiveness, product branding and positioning in market places, among others.Conversely, scientific research drive innovation in terms of cutting technology  out smart competitions, enhance quality, business trends, and differential advantages.  So either way Scientific Research drive innovation or vice versa?

Research is the Scientific method for invention and its time taking process. I agree the linkage of R&D and Innovation, but my concern is how to balance these two?

Too often, researchers have ignored the political economy: Who gains? Who loses? How can one navigate differences? In essence, little attention has been paid to local actors, viz., communities, government bodies, nongovernment and civil society organizations, the private sector, research institutes, and universities. Discounting obvious winners, one must also know who is not given the chance to create, access, use, and benefit from science, technology, and innovation.

In direct reference to this question, Slide 24 in Challenge: Science, Technology, and Innovation and the Triple Bottom Line argues that innovation is credited with attributes it does not have: innovation is not an event, a challenge, a moment, a product, or a solution; it is a process that can actually be technology-agnostic. Instead of creating and distributing more products we need to think more about tweaking processes in frugal improvements and adaptations. Science and technology may help but this will not necessarily be the case. In addition, the closer innovation is to local challenges the more likely it is to be successful. So, there must be a strong focus on end-users: they must frame the problem, define and shape innovation over time, and make it more inclusive and fit for purpose. Toward this, with appreciative inquiry, we need to revisit knowledge of what has worked—how, when, where, why, and for whom—and what has not. We can also look at old ideas and things that were innovated long ago in new contexts. We must enlarge the space for dialogue and listen more. The most innovative thing to do may well be to fortify political will.

Society is best served in principle when we do the best research we can do and in the most rigorous way.And we need to reward those who perform such research, regardless of whether they can immediately develop deliverables or not. How to best do this should be the focus of scientific studies rather than philosophical, administrative or political agendas...

Scientists can help citizens by providing accurate information in making the best decisions and avoid being misled. The ideal goal would be to end up in a society where all citizens are also scientists to some extent–that is, they have a fair, balanced view of how much we know; and, more importantly, how much we don’t know...

Innovation, Startups and Research

In my opinion, all of them are important and can be used as a solution for many problems of actual society. We have to consider it when most important problem of many countries still refers about political challenges, economic and social. Otherwise, how it will be used must depend of the level of the country is. For example, to developing countries, innovation and startups comes before a research while for developed countries the research naturally comes before. I'm sure that the cost to make researches is much higher them make innovation or startups; so, research is much more distant from the developing countries reality them the others. Besides, the researches demand long time to improve results while the innovation and startups can offer good results much faster. Otherwise, innovation and startups can be developing by the fortuity situation, while the research demands years of studies and high investment.

It is important to identify the scientific problems to be solved taking into account the short, medium and long term development needs of the economy and society.

Innovation is necessary without affecting scientific research to remain at the top of knowledge in fundamental research in which the achievement of the results surpasses the short term and will guarantee the development in the future.
