RG scholars,

I keep wondering why so much importance is attached to publications in higher institution of learning especially universities. The mandate to publish or perish could be frustrating. During or close to the period of promotion, academic staff run up and down to meet up with the required number of articles for promotion, this weighs heavily on many.

Teaching and research (T&R) are workload lecturers must carry in higher institutions of learning.

Why so much concentration on "R" and not "T" during promotion?

I feel assessment and promotion of academic staff using only research-based performance evaluation systems (published articles) may be detrimental to creativity and innovation in teaching.

Please someone should correct me if I am wrong...
