I believe you are referring to the Nigerian context where the is no effective quality assurance for teaching quality in most universities.

In most countries, teaching quality comes first before research. This is because the Lecturer/Professor is apprised by students, colleagues, department, college/school/faculty and the quality assurance department. Thiese records are kept. In some cases, community services is even rated more than research for promotion.

We really need to work on this as a nation.

There is no relation between research and teaching. Very good researcher may be bad teacher.

I agree here with Dr.Adebayo. When we compare teaching quality and research experience, the latter is easy to quantify and decision makers are happy to choose research experience to take an 'Objective' decision for promotion or for any other rewards. It is important to have specific tools that measure teaching quality as mentioned by Dr.Adebayo. I believe there is no direct correlation between research experience/capacity and teaching ability. Both should be measured independently and weighed appropriately while considering for academic promotions or for incentives. Apart from the components Dr.Adebayo mentioned, we can utilize the evidences of good practices in teaching maintained in a teaching portfolio, quality and authenticity of teaching materials and resources, classroom observation of teaching and multi-source feedback from the stakeholders to have an idea on teaching quality of a faculty.

Overall yes, I agree there is a lack of emphasis on teaching within many higher education institutions. It appears that some of this relates to finding a way to assess the quality and the overall university itself, which ranking in top journals provides a measurement.

There has also been interesting recent research which has shown that high quality publications correlates to better teaching, but ONLY at the graduate level. For the undergraduate level this doesn't relate at all.

One third teaching, one third research and one third service in most Canadian Universities now, though I agree that research is still being valued more highly than appears on paper in tenure criteria. Interestingly some universities in Western Canada now have teaching stream tenure with no requirement as to publishing and research. Perhaps the way ahead. Though that then creates a two tier faculty, and this gives rise to issues in itself... The truth is campuses worldwide are in the process of slowly accepting their shift in vocation from research centers to teaching institutions and this has not a smooth or seamless process of management of change. Systemically these institutions are embarking in painful examinations of their objectives, values, structures, and sustainability. It will take time. Some many not survive the process...

Dear All thanks for all your discussion based on academic promotion. criteria of promotion depends on type of promotion. for example i can be promoted to associate professor while an other person promoted to associate researcher. for associate professor they consider both researches and teaching records. for associate researcher, they mostly consider researches and i know number of universities hire some one like a researcher and his/her promotion will be base on research activities. clearly teaching records are not neglected in academic promotion.
