I think there is a huge role of energy sector regulator in facilitating renewable energy in developing countries. I can give an example of my country Nepal. We are an energy deficient country our economy is heavily reliant on the imported fossil fuel although we have ample possibilities of hydropower we are unable to harness it because of instability and other problems including financial and political.

For now there is an institution named Alternative Energy Promotion Center (AEPC) which promotes alternative energy and works in R&D of several renewable energy technologies that are possible in Nepal (i.e. Low cost, simple and reliable).

Besides that there are several other organizations like the Biogas Sector Partnership (BSP-Nepal) that promote renewable energy source in Nepal.

Since I am trying to work out a thesis topic in the Biomass energy (biobriquette efficiency) I have reviewed many literatures on renewable energy of Nepal so feel free to ask anything about renewable energy in Nepal.

Hi Sanford, role of renewable sources energy is world wide. Some developing countries are also promoting use of these sources of energy. In India, use of renewable sources are being promoted by the Ministry of Renewable sources, Govt. of India. Some of the state Govts. are also promoting the same sources. Dear Sanford! In Bulgaria now we have problems with promotion of Solar energy price. The price of electricity mix increase rapidli from big ammount of PV and other promoted energy sources and people are not happy to pay this integrated price- we come to polytic crisis !

In Romania there are now present in the media discussions about the opportunity to maintain the current support scheme for renewables (especially for wind and PV), with Green Certificates for every MWh. Due to this fact, the invoices for electricity augmented witn 10-20 percents. The government analyses the possibility to decrease the subsidies for green electricity.

In South Africa our power utility has focussed on economics and avoided the environmental issue until government stepped in. Our utility has a monopoly and the needs of the customers are basic (many still don't have access to electricity). So spending a great deal on becoming green doesn't make sense....

Unless if is coupled to new industry creation which leads to new jobs and economic upliftment. There are several initiatives that government have launched to make the transition, but the utility would not go it alone.
