Dear RG community:

I am currently working on an ecological study in order to analyze disease burden from cancer in my country.

I am looking for the most suitable indicator of disease burden. Given the WHO definition, this should be provided using the disability-adjusted-life-years (DALYs). However, data is scarce and epidemiology analyses in the field of cancer are usually performed using mortality rates as estimators of burden disease.

Is it valid to use mortality rates instead of DALYs for estimating burden of disease in this setting? Any particular reason for preferring one instead of another?

Thank you for your valuable input!

Andrés
