Yes there is Adam !!!!!!! Most of the compression (for Bandwidth and rendering) , Gamma correction (TV /device dependency ) , reconstruction -picture quality(for varying devices and accommodating lossy channel rather noise adding by virtue of transmission lines ) etc etc .
Slightly before internet was cable TV , unfortunately you people (young ones) do not know what "Ghost images" looked like, flickering, salt and pepper nosie etc etc...
With internet it is telecom cables so huge chunks of data (in case of video and images) , opening a page took ages (ok 5 mins ) , populating it with icons /images/logo ...
Sorry , don't want to scare you : Tristimulus (RGB) for reproduction of millions of color (today) back then was a small set . Red and pink now machine can differentiate !?!
