I´m an environmental historian and I work about oceans, coasts and watersheds.

My advice to you is that you check the work of Verena Winiwarter. She is an historian, but has been working with natural scientists about the Danube river. Their work is very interesting, because it they analyse natural and human factors in river changes along time. If tourism is a priority in your project, you should include the history of the river in it.

Verena Winiwarter is in Research Gate too, so it is not difficult to find her articles.
