As far as I know, the light propagation in planar waveguides in specific modes which is either TE or TM. For TE/TM modes excitation, the optical source must be either TE polarized or TM polarized.

However in this (attached) publication (in experimental procedure section):

"A sensor based on the planar-polarization interferometer" , Sensors and Actuators A: Physical, Volume 68, Issues 1–3, 15 June 1998, Pages 384-387.

The polarization azimuth is 45° relative to wave-guide surface. I am confused, which mode did they excite in this case?

Note: They claimed successful propagation through the waveguide.
