I would like to learn from the ResearchGate community their thoughts on the impact of swapping D2O for H2O when observing the mutarotation of lactose. Would the conversion of alpha lactose to beta lactose be faster or slower in the presence of D2O?

It would be slower because the migration from alpha lactose to beta lactose in D2O would be hindered by less mobility of heavier hydrogen atom.
Good morning Teodoro and Amritanshu, thanks for the answers. I like the explanation concerning the mobility of D2O being reduced because of the heaver D atoms compared to H as in normal water. But what about the bond strengths, I would be very interested in your opinions regarding whether activation of the process would change.
