I'm running simulations of changing rainfall conditions (interannual mean and SD) to evaluate the effects on herbaceous ANPP (mean and CV). Under most simulations the increase in CV of ANPP is smaller than the increase in the CV of rainfall. Does that sound logical? I haven't been able to find any studies that looked at this issue. Are there any documented studies in the literature?
This is an interesting question... I think that this all depends on the sensitivity of ANPP to rainfall. This is likely not static even though there are some very general global scale relationships. The spatial or temporal scale of interest will influence this relationship. E.g. if production is limited by light, N, temperature etc. then rainfall variability will be larger than ANPP variability.
