TRIP and/or TWIP effect, is found to be effective in enhacing the work-hardening ability in many systems, such as in Fe alloys, Ti alloys. But, for Al alloys,TRIP and/or TWIP effect has not been reported. I would like to know, if, it is possible to produce these above effects in Al alloys by alloying design?
Prof. Raabe, many thanks for your kind comment. For Al alloys, due to the high SFE, the Al matrix is not possible to achieve TWIP effect. Meanwhile, these is no allotropic transformation in Al, TRIP is therefore difficult to present. Personally, lessons may come from metallic glass composites, For example, in Cu-Zr metallic glass, upon deformation, B2 phase is promoted and then B2 to B19' transition prevails, having a strong effect on the deformation behaviour of the residual glassy matrix ( Nature materials, 2010, 9(6): 473-477). Against this background, if secondary particles having the structure transition are introduced into Al alloys, TRIP might be possible, personally.

Prof. Raabe's explanation based on SFE is certainly the fundamental concept to explain TRIP and TWIP effects. We may perhaps just add that even if the SFE of aluminum was sufficiently lowered by alloying we would still not see TRIP in aluminum. As you indicated correctly, aluminum does not possess an allotriomorphic transformation and therefore TRIP is altogether impossible. However, in the example you are giving, if I understood you correctly ( I am not familiar with the system you mentioned), you are referring to a transformation in the reinforcement particles not in matrix. So we cannot say it sets an example for aluminum.
