For my research project, I am planning on upregulating the GABRA1 gene, which codes for the GABA alpha 1 receptor subunit in some GABA receptors. According to previous studies, individuals with higher amounts of GABA alpha 1 receptor subunits became alcohol-dependent quicker. However, it is not specified if there were more receptors or just more receptors with this subunit. Thus, if I increase the amount of that receptor subunit, will it just incorporate more alpha 1 receptors in the existing receptors, become more likely to produce receptors with alpha 1, or produce more receptors?
