If a concrete platform is built on piles over a abandoned paddy land of about 10 ha , is there any possibility of accumilating methane uderside of the stucture and cause destructions such as fires, poisoning, or explotion. There will be many piles to support the structure and it may disrupt the air flow as well. The hight of the piles will be around 10m or so . The paddy field will inundaded time to time as it is one of the flood retention area within that area.
Yes, it is a possibility to accumulate Methane and/or other adverse gases underneath a large enough slab-on-Grade that is pile supported. I have worked on several projects, including Landfills and regions that had to account for Radon gases. We did install chambered mat-systems underneath to “off-vent“ (direct away) the possibility of any accumulated gases. Keep in mind our groundwater levels were 4-6 feet below ground. When it is used as a retention/detention storage area, during flooding events, you may need to consider partial culverts and/or piping for venting, should Mat-systems not apply.
