I think, nest census may not be affected by spraed of home range. Nests are located in small areas (territories) within a home range.

You need to determine the extent or spread of nesting sites, so yes it is 'appropriate'. But that's not the point. You need to decide if you actually want to know what is happening and if you're prepared to undertake the research
