To be honest, you would need to be more specific. Public health is a very large international discipline - ranging from health screening through to disaster preparation and management. It involves medical approaches i.e. epidemiology through to health policy formation. It spans the disciplines of health education and health promotion.
I asked a question - as this link below - 5-years ago about the differences between health education and health promotion. It has had almost 25,000 reads and over 450 answers. A lot of the content and varying perspectives relates to public health and may give you some idea as to its use potential and scope.
Public health is so broad a field with myriads of topic to choose from. I therefore suggest that you look at your setting or geographical location for public health concerns to inform your write up to make it more applicable and realistic.
Brown, A. (2017). "Breastfeeding as a public health responsibility: a review of the evidence." Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics 30(6): 759-770.
There are many emerging trends in public health you may choose one as a topic. Health informatics, evidence based public health, integration of healthcare and public health, social determinants of health, health equity, health disparities, and cross jurisdictional resource sharing are some of those trends worth researching.
As many comments above, I would recommend you to focus on one specific area of your interest. Public health is a transversal specialty, so you are really lucky! You can just pick virtually any topic. Of course, I would try to choose something meaningful to your country/setting. But if I had to give you an answer, vaccines are always a good topic and one of the "greatest hits" of public health.
Many times there are studies which identify "top areas of concern" or "top areas of need" match any of those up with what makes you want to do more, read more, or lean more, and go for it!
I agree with what had been mentioned. I would like to add something general, which is the characteristic of a good research question. It should be 'FINER" that is: Feasible, Interesting, Novel, Ethical, and Relevant. You have to add something new to the field of public heath, and you have to fill a gap of knowledge in this field. An easy way, is to read a recommendation of a PhD thesis which usually recommends further research for a topic that had not been studied before.
The population health indicators in your country (life expectancy, infant mortality .....) and their relation with the level and quality of population accessibility to health care is a subject that will be of interest in your country and worlwide .
The best approach will be to form research partnerships with potential users of the research findings and pick their brains about which questions they need answered through research.
What can public health officials do to better educate the general public to care about one’s health enough to make lifelong changes prior to development of disease(s) they are at high risk for?
And/Or Once disease has manifested in a person, how does a public health official or medical professional convince individuals (and family members) to care enough to actually make the necessary lifelong changes?
Your questions is very interesting. Probably you could discuss with key stakeholders in your context, the Ministry of Health leadership and other key stakeholders in order to work on something that is problematic for them and that they would like to find a systematic answer for. The topic should be relevant for your context and the actors in your health system.
This is a great point, You may choose a topics regarding to your context (region or countryside situation). during the topic selection, try to ask yourself: is it public health concern? is it feasible, is it needed (emergency priority, political acceptable,....)?
I see many good suggestions here, but I am not sure that we understand your question. Are you asking about some research topics that you can conduct and then write a paper for a research journal? Are you wanting to write about a topic for a local publication (aimed at the general public there, physicians or ?)? Are you wanting to write a commentary for a Public Health journal? Do you want to write a review article for a journal? Or do you want to write a general article about public health in Somalia for people around the world interested in public health?
The type of article you want to write will make a difference on the type of topic you choose. Research articles are usually on highly defined topics. Commentaries can be much broader. Many of the article topics suggested here are quite broad, and so you would need to narrow them down to a specific topic for writing. Using your knowledge of your local situation would generally be best and useful for others. An example of an article topic appropriate to your area that could be researched and written for any of these article types might be the use and public health issues associated with chewing Khat (or Betel nuts), looking at the social, demographic, medical, psychological....aspects.
