For an undergraduate level course, I need a simple tool for solving optimal economic dispatch (OED), and combined optimal economic and emissions dispach (CEED) based on classical optimization methods. Offline (i.e. without the need of Internet) tools are preferable.
I once taught a class on process optimization. In that class I had one student who worked at McDonalds and another that worked at the Tom's cracker factory, where they made packages of cheese and peanut butter crackers, along with a few other items. The students supplied information from their own observations at their respective jobs. With participation from the entire class, we built a model for each process in Excel and then used the Solver Add-In to optimize output, minimize wait time, or maximize cash flow. We started with very simple calculations and added more and more considerations. We saw that some arrangements led to unreasonable solutions or no solution at all. Each step was a learning process for the students. They got to participate and see the results immediately. As an assignment I had them develop and submit a model of something similar that they were familiar with. Years later I still get Emails from some of those students who remember this assignment and how it changed their perspective. Every student has Excel. I have a lot of very large Excel spreadsheets that have calculations of power plant performance, emissions, fuel consumption, response to weather, risk of icing, rainfall, and dam storage.
Thank you for your answer. I truly like your approach, and I adopted it in teaching complex topics. Due to time limits and some other constraints, I just need an available educational tool for solving the mentioned problems for facilitating an extra home activity to the students. The construction of a modular software tool is outside the scope of the course.
