I have designed DC/DC buck converter for feeding motor load with voltage rating of 230VDC. Initially the IGBT is working fine but after sometime of operation. the device is getting SC and it cannot be used furthur. I dont know why?
you should consider the following points in selecting the IGBT:
1- The rated current of the IGBT should 2 or 3 times the rated current of the motor.
2- The off state voltage should be high enough.
3- you should design a deadtime for the IGBT
4- take care of di/dt and dv/dt in the dynamic situation.

Thinking about it briefly, at least 10 to 20 different failure mechanisms come to mind that could destroy your device.
However, not knowing anything about the setup, they all may be wrong in the end.
Could you share some more information?
Schematics?
Parameters of Device and Motor?
Device Package?
Cooling Effort?
Driver Schematic?
Current senor in make and position?
Anything more detailed would help to help you.

Ya..!!
Initially i was using MOSFET IRF series but it was not able to drive because of heavy drive then i replaced the MOSFET with IGBT. IGBT was working fine but becuase of improper design of Inductor used in the circuit, the device was unable to drive and also i have not used snubber circuit. then i realised all that and added designed inductor for that circuit and also the snubber. Now the set up is working good
