It may be that the authors themselves did not actually know the temperature of the samples. However, in that case the article should mention what microwave oven model was used here since that defines the power density in the samples by the sizes.
In case of doubt the only option may be to search if (a) one of the authors is still available or (b) look for papers that cited your source with reference to this particular method and ask one of the authors of these how they interpreted it.
