In documentary review/secondary research, the student does a series of chapters which are all based on review of literature and documents. At least one of these chapters should be the 'field' and encapsulate the unit of analysis linked to the research question and where theoretical perspectives are used as len/lenses. However, there is not much in the methodology literature I am able to find to guide the decision of how to authorise the unit of analysis. Also confounded by statistical work that discusses unit of observation and samples as well!
