I am preparing EDTA 0.5 M EDTA at a pH of 8, which has not dissolved since yesterday. Is there a way I can get it dissolved?
Hello Daniel,
EDTA will not dissolve unless and until the pH is between 7.5 and 8.
I prepare 0.5 M EDTA pH 8.0 as follows.
1. Weigh 18.61g EDTA disodium salt and place it in a 100ml bottle.
2. Add 80ml distilled water to the bottle.
3. Add a small magnetic bar to the bottle and place the bottle on the magnetic stirrer for proper mixing. The EDTA will not dissolve at this stage.
4. You may note the pH of the solution using the pH meter.
5. To dissolve EDTA, add a few NAOH pellets at a time and wait till the pellets dissolve before you add more.
6. Approximately 2g of NAOH pellets will be required to reach the pH of 8.0.
7. This procedure may take a little time for EDTA to dissolve completely.
8. Once EDTA is fully dissolved, make the solution to 100ml with distilled water.
Did you follow a similar protocol as above?
Best.
Thank you very much, Malcolm Nobre Malcolm. I followed a similar procedure just the part where I had to add the pellets in bits. I will rectify it and see. Thank you.
